사진이 묻고 건축이 답하다 | 반치옥 작가 합동 전시전
분야를 막론하고 좋은 작업은 의식의 경계를 넓힙니다. 생각해 본 적 없는 것을 눈앞에 들이밀며 이것도 가능하지 않겠느냐 묻고, 가 보지 못한 풍경으로 당신을 데려가서 여기도 한 번 경험해 보라고 부추깁니다.
이 전시는 건축사 박현모의 아뜰리에11 사옥과 사진가 반치옥의 공동전시로 기획되었습니다. 사진가의 화각 안에서 피사체를 다루듯, 건축가가 자신의 사옥속에서 빛과 선을 다루는 방식을 구경하고, 함께 수다를 떨고 싶었습니다.
1층의 섬돌 사진은 '고래를 위한 포트레이트 시리즈1-섬돌'이라는 제목으로 2019년에 전시했던것을 옮겨왔습니다. 사람을 찍는 방식으로 조명을 맞추고 그 자리에 대신 돌을 놓은 작업입니다.
대형 걸개 사진으로 걸린 작품은 같은 문제의식의 변주인데, 사찰의 일주문을 지키는 사천왕상처럼 거리와 사람을 내려다보도록 배치했습니다. 마음 속을 꿰뚥어 보는 눈빛의 사천왕처럼, 돌얼굴의 거인들 앞에서 자신의 마음 속을 들여다 보고 비밀이 들켜 당황하고 또 다시 감추는 경험을 주고 싶었습니다.
마라도에 들어설 교회를 위한 모형은 박현모 건축사 사무소의 작업입니다. 섬이라는 지형과 좌표, 의미를 해석하고 단순화해서 새로운 공간 안에 함축시켰습니다. 한 지점에 들어서는 건축물이 어떤 과정을 거쳐 구체화 되고 마침내 하나의 건물로서 완성되는 것인지, 건축사의 생각이 흘러가는 길을 엿볼 수 있습니다.
전시공간 외에도 건물의 외벽과 내벽을 모두 활용함으로써 관객들이 사진과 공간을 함께 즐길 수 있도록 의도했습니다. 생뚱맞은 사진이 걸린 건물 앞을 지나며, 건축가가 만들어 준 재미있는 미로의 길을 지나며 당신의 일상이 잠시 낮설어졌으면 합니다.
Photography Asks, Architecture Answers
| Joint Exhibition with Artist Ban Chiok
It presents something you've never considered before, asking, "Why not this?" and takes you to a landscape you've never seen, encouraging you to experience it for yourself.
This exhibition is a joint exhibition between architect Park Hyun-mo's Atelier 11 office and photographer Ban Chi-ok. Just as a photographer handles a subject within their frame, I wanted to observe how the architect handles light and lines within his own office and share a conversation around it.
The photograph of the stone stairs on the first floor is a reinstallation of the piece titled "Portrait Series for a Whale 1 - Stone Stairs," which was exhibited in 2019. It involves setting up lighting as if photographing a person, but instead of a person, a stone is placed in the scene.
The large hanging photograph is a variation of the same theme, arranged like the Four Heavenly Kings guarding a temple gate, overlooking the street and people. Just like the Four Heavenly Kings, whose gaze pierces into the depths of the heart, I wanted the viewers to feel as if their own hearts were being peered into by the stone-faced giants, leading to the experience of having their secrets revealed, feeling embarrassed, and then trying to hide them again.
The model for the church to be built on Mara Island is a work of Park Hyun-mo's architectural office. It interprets and simplifies the island's terrain, coordinates, and significance, encapsulating them within a new space. It offers a glimpse into the architect's process, showing how a building materializes through various stages and ultimately becomes a completed structure.
Beyond the exhibition space, we also aimed to make use of both the building's exterior and interior walls, allowing the audience to enjoy both the photographs and the space. As you pass by a building with seemingly unrelated photographs hanging on its walls, and walk through the fun maze created by the architect, I hope your daily life becomes momentarily unfamiliar.
